The lifetime prevalence rates for depression are over 20%. How do I know if I have Depression?

Mainly, depression is accompanied with what is called a mood episode. A mood episode is a period of time, outside of your normal mood, that lasts for at least 2 weeks or more. During this time period, you will feel more sad and/or irritable than normal (more days than not). You may also experience changes in sleep, diet, isolation, decreased self-worth, and/or suicidal.

Depression can present in other forms as well and will often present differently in children and adolescents compared to adults. Due to the various nature depression is displayed, it’s important to get a proper evaluation from a qualified mental health professional such as a psychologist or psychiatrist.

However, in chronic case and more severe forms of depression, with proper treatment, remission can be more frequent and mood episodes can be less severe pending on the type of treatment used.
