What is Substance Abuse (Addiction)?

Substance abuse/addiction is rampant in the United States. According to research, the 12 month prevalence rate of addiction/substance abuse within the U.S. ranges from 15-61%. Addiction and substance abuse can not only lead to death but also ruins the lives of family members of those who suffer from addiction and substance abuse.

How is Substance Abuse (Addiction) treated?

Addiction changes how your brain functions and can also create structural changes. This is why relapse rates are so high. Advanced Psychotherapeutics offers a comprehensive outpatient treatment program that works because we treat the WHOLE person. In addition to counseling, we offer non-invasive brain stimulation and imaging  techniques that normalize functional changes that drugs have caused.

Substance abuse/addition treatment can differ depending on the severity. It will be necessary to obtain a complete evaluation from a mental health professional such as a clinical psychologist to determine the proper level of care needed. At times, inpatient treatment and detox may be advised, particularly when it comes to heavy alcohol addiction as the detox process can be fatal if not managed properly.

Once detox has taken place, treatment can take the form of medication management, psychotherapy, and the use of neurofeedback. Psychotherapy and contingency management are musts. The use of neurofeedback and in some cases the use of non-invasive brain stimulation can be used to help restore functioning to the brain where function has been lost due to the substance abuse/addiction. These treatments are guided by brain mapping that show decreased functioning as a result of the substance abuse/addiction. Substance abuse/addition treatment is targeted specifically to those areas of the brain designed to increase neuronal activity and can enhance progress of psychotherapy.

Can Substance Abuse (Addiction) be cured?

This is a matter of theory. The medical model holds that once an addict, always an addict. However, this is one theory of many. The reason substance abuse/addiction is believed to be incurable is due to the high rate of relapse. However, many have beaten their addiction and have remained sober for more years then they have abused and are no more compelled to use than a non-substance abuser/addict. This is a cure by any medical standard. At Advanced Psychottherapeutics, we treat addiction for the cure, not to maintain.

We believe that substance abuse/addition can be beaten. We offer the most comprehensive outpatient treatment anywhere. We offer complete diagnosis and evaluation services along with comprehensive individual and group psychotherapy, non-invasive brain stimulation, and neurofeedback. These treatment just don’t treat the psychological addition but also treat the subsequent neurological deficits that often accompany substance abuse/addiction.
